Veganism is on the rise, and cities around the world are becoming more vegan-friendly. But which cities are the best for vegetarians and vegans? To answer this question, several studies have been conducted to determine which cities have the most vegan restaurants per capita.
Portland, Oregon
, came out on top, while San Bernardino, California, was at the bottom of the list. Scottsdale, Arizona, was not in the top 20, but it did have the highest proportion of restaurants serving vegetarian options, at 27.76%, as well as the highest proportion of restaurants with vegan options, at 16.01%.As an expert in veganism and plant-based diets, I can confidently say that Portland is one of the best cities to be vegan in North America.Nearly every restaurant in the city offers plant-based options. San Diego (including La Jolla) has 22 fully vegan restaurants per 100,000 inhabitants, which would place it just below San Francisco. The sunny capital of Portugal has also become much more vegan-friendly in recent years, with many vegan restaurants opening up. Using its own data collected from more than 180 countries, HappyCow determined which cities ranked best based on many factors, including the number of fully vegan restaurants within 10 km (6.2 miles) of each city center. After weighing all the metrics, WalletHub put the cities in ranking order.
Taipei
is one of the best cities in the world for vegans. It was even a decade ago when I visited it. Portland is also one of the best cities for vegans in the U. S., with the highest vegan restaurants per capita in the United States. Berlin has plenty of fully vegan restaurants, but its ranking is lower than other cities due to its population size.
Bristol
is one of the best cities for vegans in the UK and has long been known for its vegan scene.Other cities that made it onto this list include San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City, London, Toronto, Vancouver, Amsterdam and Sydney. When determining which cities are best for vegans, not only was the number of vegan restaurants taken into account but also other criteria such as climate and access to fresh produce.
